SCORES of hot air balloons will fill Tiverton’s skies when the annual Balloon and Music Festival takes place later this year.

Dates for the popular event have been announced with organisers hoping it takes off in style on July 12 to 14.

Last year’s festival saw more than 8,000 people and this year is expected to be bigger than ever and sees balloons of all shapes, colours and sizes descend and ascend over the course of the weekend.

As darkness falls on Friday and Saturday, the skies will come alive with the Night Glow Fire and Light Show. Balloonists will light their burners, inflate their balloons and transform them into giant light bulbs which will light up the night in a dazzling display of colours, in time with music.

The spectacular festival has raised £16,000 over the last two years and will take place on the combined Petroc/Tiverton High School Campus and its organisers are expecting an even bigger and better turn out in support of two valued local charities, Devon Air Ambulance Trust and Children’s Hospice South West plus a number of local clubs and organisations.

This year’s festival will see a Taste of the West marquee dedicated to showcasing local food and drink and for the little ones, the outdoor ‘Kids Zone’ is sure to entertain for hours.

On Sunday 18th September, super group Metronomy will be returning to their native South Devon to do an exclusive live show at The Attic/Venue nightclub on Torquay’s harbourside.

Metronomy started out as the solo project of lead singer and songwriter, Joseph Mount in 1999. Joseph is from Totnes and the current single entitled The Bay was filmed in Torbay with the help of the local tourist board. The single is enjoying international success and the video has had almost a million views already on You Tube in just a few weeks.

The single comes from the album entitled The English Riviera. The album has just been nominated as Album of the Year for the highly prestigious Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize with the winners to be announced on 6th September. Metronomy opened the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury this year and were recently on The Jools Holland Show. Their music is infectious, melodic, electronic, dancey, current and stylish.
Metronomy join the list of Devon music success stories – Muse, Coldplay, Joss Stone, Seth Lakeman all emerged from Devon in recent years to enjoy international acclaim.

South Devon is all set to go “crab crazy”…

…with a feast of fun family events with the launch of the first ever South Devon Crab Festival at the Church House Inn at Harberton on Sunday July 31 (1.30pm onwards).

Celebrity seafood chef Mitch Tonks will open the festival (1-7 August 2011) which will herald a week-long programme of crab related events at locations all across South Devon.

Tourism businesses, crab fishermen and chefs have all come together in a festival to celebrate one of the UK’s finest and delicious seafood.

Families at the festival launch will be able to limber up for the “sideways” races, dress up for the fancy dress parade, try their hand at picking crab at the crab demos with local crab fisherman Rob Simmonds or simply relax and enjoy eating crab with some great live music!

The South Devon Crab Festival follows on from the launch of the highly successful “Lets have a cracking time” sustainable food campaign last year which promoted the joys of eating of South Devon crab.

Highlights of the festival will include crab tastings, workshops, cook-ins, and a crab treasure hunt. There will also be a wide range of competitions and beach events as well as South Devon’s famous “Crab Celebrity” making an appearance at the four main events in the area. South Devon Crab will also take centre stage at the famous Shaldon Water Carnival (August 6) and the finale of the festival with the crab street party in Dartmouth (August 7).

Shaldon Water Carnival | 6 August 2011
For the past fifty years Shaldon water carnival has been celebrating its unique community spirit and maritime heritage with a magnificent parade of decorated boats at the harbour side in Shaldon.

Beach events begin at 10.30am with a sand sculpture competition as well as prizes for the ‘best dressed crab’ in the fancy dress competition. Celeb TV Gardener Toby Buckland will be joining in the fun, with crab cookery demos on the beach. The decorated boats parade begins at 4.30pm, followed by sumptuous Devon cream teas on the village green in Shaldon with live music and entertainment continuing long in to the evening.

South Devon Crab Street Party | 7 August 2011, 12.30pm
Mitch Tonks will be master of ceremonies for what promises to be the best crab street party ever on the South Embankment by the River Dart in Dartmouth. Expect a carnival atmosphere, celeb chefs, live music, bunting and trestle tables heaving with delicious South Devon crab to feed a crowd of around 400 people who are expected to attend the event (ticketed event, reservations in advance). Crabbing boats will be moored alongside the embankment and crews of local crab fishermen will be testing their crabbing skills in the not to be missed “McCrab competition.”

Torquay is the capital of the English Riviera – the birthplace of Agatha Christie and more famously the fictional setting of the classic BBC TV show Fawlty Towers. Don’t expect to find the actual hotel here, however, as the series was filmed elsewhere.

The centre of the town is the lively marina and harbour, including the listed copper-domed Edwardian Pavilion, which now houses a shopping centre. Eastwards the cliffs rise up to Daddyhole Plain, a great chasm in the cliff where the plain meets the sea, and the views from here are superb.

The beaches, though not as broad and sandy as those to be found at neighbouring Paignton, are numerous and spread well apart, which helps to disperse the summer crowds.

The most attractive of the major beaches is Oddicombe, with its picturesque backdrop of steep sandstone cliffs. The descent is steep and a cliff railway runs down 770 feet to the shingle below.

The Oddicombe/Babbacombe area is also home to Torquay’s best tourist attractions. Kents Cavern form one of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe, where a fascinating and atmospheric half a mile guided tour takes you back through two million years of history, with many natural spectacular rock formations.

One of Torquay’s favourite attractions is Babbacombe Model Village, a really outstanding piece of design, full of interest for all ages, and regarded as a masterpiece of miniature landscape gardening.

Paignton’s beaches are the best in the Torbay area. For those with young families, there’s nothing finer than arming yourself with a bucket and spade and decamping there for the day. Paignton’s gently shelving sands, multi-coloured beach huts, backed by a broad swathe of lawn and general flatness, make it ideal for young families.

Visit Paignton Zoo and embark on a journey of discovery through the world’s threatened habitats. Experience the elegance of Oldway Mansion, the distinctive architecture of Palace Avenue or take a walk along the green coastline of Elberry Cove.

Paignton’s Queen’s Park train station is also the terminus of the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway, which connects with Goodrington Sands beach before following the Dart to Kingswear, seven miles south. You could make a day of it by taking the ferry from Kingswear to Dartmouth, then taking a riverboat up the Dart to Totnes, from where you can take any bus back to Paignton – a “Round Robin” ticket lets you do this.

During the summer months you will find the area hosts many festivals and fairs, in addition to the many events which are held on the green.
