‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1′: The Reviews Are In!

Read what critics have to say about the latest ‘Twilight Saga’ installment.

Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” the penultimate entry in “The Twilight Saga,” hit theaters Friday (November 18), and millions of fans around the world will see what Bella, Edward and Jacob are up to in this installment.

Many of them won’t read a single review before going to the theater, but if you are curious about what the nation’s critics have to say about the latest vampire romance, we’ve taken a sampling that best represents the overall consensus.

Turns out, “Breaking Dawn” is just like every other “Twilight” movie. Fans won’t be disappointed, but outsiders may have trouble getting adjusted, since the film doesn’t take any breaks to explain what’s come before. But director Bill Condon brings some nice touches with his first venture into the series.

Here’s what the critics have to say.

The Story
” ‘Dawn’ picks up where ‘Eclipse’ left off, with our heroes Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) set to wed. The wedding is as storybook as the romance, which explains why there are so many ‘Twilight’ moms: Bella is perceptive and patient, saving sex for marriage. Edward is loyal and has been waiting a century to lose his virginity. See a zombie be that patient.” — Scott Bowles, USA Today

The Honeymoon Sex Scene
“The ‘Twilight’ movies have devoted three episodes to Bella Swan’s clinging to her virginity despite the compelling appeal of Edward Cullen, the vampire. Now comes ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,’ in which you have to give her credit: She holds out until after her wedding. Then she and Edward fly to Brazil and a luxurious honeymoon hideaway on the beach, where the morning after her wedding night she is black and blue with bruises, the frame of the bed is broken, all of the furniture is tossed around and the draperies are shredded. Good gravy! What happened? We have no idea. The movie doesn’t show us! Yes, the most eagerly awaited deflowering in recent movie history takes place entirely off-screen.” — Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Taylor Lautner
“As Jacob, Edward’s long-suffering, oft-rejected rival for Bella’s affection, Mr. Lautner has plenty of reasons to strip angry: he can turn into a wolf, for starters, and Jacob’s musculature has long been one of the most special of the movies’ effects. That’s reason enough for Mr. Condon to get the character’s shirt off, as is the unavoidable truth that Mr. Lautner, whose pumped physique and flat affect bring to mind one of those friendly pizza delivery boys in a pornographic movie, remains a dish best served with as few words and clothes as possible.” — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

On Splitting Up “Breaking Dawn”
“When the decision was made to split Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into two films to bring that blockbuster series to a close, there was cynical talk regarding mercenary motives to milk as many dollars as possible out of the franchise. Once the films came out, however, that talk stopped, so emphatically did the massive narrative incident justify the extended length. On the basis of ‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1,’ though, the same cannot be said of this series ender, which feels as bloated and anemic as Bella becomes during her pregnancy.” — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

Final Word
“The fourth film in the ‘Twilight’ series reveals a flash or two of real filmmaking (mostly in a suggestively grotesque birthing sequence), enough to save it from pure lousiness. But a significant number of its 117 minutes do seem like hours, and whenever certain actors take the lead and set the pace of the dialogue, time itself begins to crawl backward and the breaking dawn begins to feel like yesterday’s breaking dawn, or last Tuesday’s.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

Robert Pattinson On ‘American Idiot,’ Jeff Buckley Rumors: ‘I Don’t Know’

“Breaking Dawn” remains the hot item on Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner’s dance cards for the foreseeable future, but it’s certainly not the only movie either actor has in development. Robert Pattinson Calls Taylor Lautner Ab Comparison ‘Unfair’

‘I realized [my abs] weren’t as good as Taylor’s, so I just ate every bit of chocolate,’ Pattinson laughs during ‘MTV First.’

Much ado is made over the handsomeness of the leading men of “Twilight” — Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner — particularly when it comes to the subject of their being shirtless in any way, shape or form.

Their fervent fans know from reading Stephenie Meyer’s books and seeing the first two trailers that there is plenty of shirtlessness in store for them when “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1″ opens November 18.

MTV News was lucky enough to sit down with the two heartthrobs during “MTV First: Breaking Dawn” on Thursday, during which we asked a fan-submitted question about how they prep for their shirtless scenes.

“No M&M’s,” said Kristen Stewart, who was seated between her co-stars.

“Yeah, I didn’t eat any candy and I didn’t drink any beer for a while,” Pattinson said of his health-conscious prep. “I went kind of nuts. Me and Kristen went nuts working out, because we hadn’t worked out for any of [the previous films],” he admitted.

Then, upon noticing that his shirtless photo was being held up next to Lautner’s, RPattz took offense in the comparison. “This is so unfair doing a comparison. Everyone says I painted on my abs in ['New Moon'] — I did not! Taylor has his painted on too!” he accused with a laugh.

“What?” Lautner responded. “What are you talking about? I don’t understand this.”

Pattinson stopped his playful ribbing of Lautner for a moment to finish answering the question about his diet before shirtless scenes are filmed.

“I had it for, like, two weeks,” he said of his abs, with Stewart agreeing and adding that they gave up being healthy immediately after their skin-showing scenes were wrapped.

“As soon as I didn’t have to be shirtless anymore [my good habits were] gone immediately,” Pattinson continued. “During [filming in] Brazil, the day before I had to do my shirtless scene, I realized [my abs] weren’t as good as Taylor’s, so I just ate every bit of chocolate in the mini-bar. I started eating cheeseburgers and stuff.”

For all the “Twilight” fans out there — and, more specifically, the prone-to-swoon hopeless romantics — one of the most anticipated moments in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1″ is the wedding of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).

Fans have been buzzing about it for as long as we can remember, and on Thursday (November 3) — thanks to our exclusive “MTV First: Breaking Dawn” with Stewart, Pattinson and Taylor Lautner — we got another sneak peek at how sweet, emotional and beautiful those nuptials are going to be when we finally see them on the big screen, when the film opens November 18.

Our clip opens with Bella’s mother Renee (Sarah Clarke) entering the room in which Alice (Ashley Greene) and Rosalie (Nikki Reed) are helping Bella get ready for her wedding day. “Oh my gosh, you’re so beautiful,” Mom says when she sees Bella, who is still in casual clothes but has her hair and makeup finished.

“Oh, honey — crap, my mascara!” Renee exclaims, at which point Alice hands her a tissue. “Thanks,” she says, dabbing at her eyes. “Charlie, get in here!” she calls to Bella’s father (played by Billy Burke).

Charlie pops his head into the frame tentatively. “You sure?” he asks, then walks slowly into the room, at which point Bella — seeing her dad all dolled up in a tuxedo — is so surprised she stands up out of her chair.

“I know,” he says, seeing her reaction. “I look hot.”

“We thought you needed something blue,” Renee says to Bella as Charlie opens a jewelry case to reveal a jewel-encrusted decorative hair comb.

“And something old,” Charlie adds. “Besides your mother,” he jokes.

“Thanks,” Renee scoffs.

“It was Grandma Swan’s,” Charlie tells Bella.

“But we added the sapphires,” Renee adds as Bella picks up the comb for a closer look.

“It’s beautiful, you guys,” Bella says, handing the comb to Alice to put in her hair. “Wow. Thank you so much.”

“It’s your first family heirloom,” Renee says. “You can pass it on to your daughter and her daughter,” she adds, tearing up and dabbing her eyes, and the scene fades to black.

‘Breaking Dawn’ Sex Scene ‘Super Serious,’ Robert Pattinson Jokes

‘It’s not just human sex. It’s … obviously blown a little bit out of proportion,’ Kristen Stewart adds on ‘MTV First.’

Of all the moments fans are eagerly awaiting to see after “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1″ hits theaters on November 18 — the wedding and infamous birth scene included — few can measure up to the hype surrounding Edward and Bella’s first sex scene.

When MTV News’ Josh Horowitz sat down with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner for “MTV First” and asked the cast questions submitted via Twitter, it was no surprise that the fans wanted to know more. One of the first questions asked was: “Rob and Kristen, was it extremely awkward filming the love scene in the movie? Were you guys laughing a lot throughout?”

Both Stewart and Pattinson turned quiet after hearing the question, and the answer was unanimous and definitely a joke. “Super serious,” Pattinson said.

“Yeah, me too,” Stewart agreed. The mood was certainly lighthearted and jokey, but Stewart ended up giving the question a serious answer. “Not to give anything away … You’ve been working for so long, and it’s also not real,” Stewart said. “It’s not just human sex. It’s … obviously blown a little bit out of proportion, slightly. It’s kind of like the most important scene in the movie. It’s so weird.”

Pattinson agreed and shared his own, let’s say, intimate experiences filming the love scene. “I just ended up thinking purely about vanity things,” Pattinson said. “You’re sitting there in a little g-string. … They give me a big g-string, but it was too small for me. It was like old ham.”

Not to be left out, Lautner shared his relief to have missed out on a g-stringing in “Breaking Dawn,” but reminded everyone that he had his “fair share of g-strings in ‘Eclipse.’

Taylor Lautner Signs On To Star In Gus Van Sant Indie

Indie director Gus Van Sant may not have won the directing slot on “Breaking Dawn – Part 1″ like Robert Pattinson wanted him to, but the auteur is getting a second chance to work with one of the stars of “Twilight,” Taylor Lautner.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the two are set to make a small-budget film together based on a nonfiction article from the New Yorker, but there aren’t many details about the project other than that.

Van Sant and Lautner recently found themselves in the middle of controversy. After photos of the two found their way online, GQ Australia asked Lautner during an interview whether the director and screenwriter Lance Ian Black, who had also been photographed with them, had hit on him. The publication has since apologized for the question, and Lautner explained that there was nothing odd about a writer and director meeting with an actor. Knowledge of this project now sheds more light on those meetings.

The role means a change in direction for Lautner, whose work outside the “Twilight” series since his rise to stardom has been limited to a small part in the ensemble rom-com “Valentine’s Day” with then-girlfriend Taylor Swift and a disappointing box-office debut as an action star in this past summer’s “Abduction.” That film’s lackluster receipts had critics skeptical as to the future career prospects of the man behind the abs.

A role in a film with the Academy-Award-nominated director at the helm could spell good things for Lautner in his post-”Twilight” years, especially considering Van Sant’s track record for directing great performances from actors.

‘Twilight’ Fan-Favorite Moment #4: Taylor Lautner’s Abs

We’re counting down your favorite ‘Twilight Saga’ moments before Rob, Kristen and Taylor join us live Thursday at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV!

Taylor Lautner, as Jacob Black, shows off his abs in “New Moon”

Twilighters are just days away from the premiere of “MTV First: Breaking Dawn – Part 1″, which goes live Thursday on MTV at 7:56 p.m. ET with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner unveiling a previously unreleased clip from the fourth installment of the “Twilight” franchise. Following MTV’s special, the three stars will sit down for an exclusive Q&A on MTV.com.

Of course, in anticipation of Thursday’s MTV premiere, devoted Bella, Edward and Jacob followers are one step closer to learning what might be the #1 fan-voted “Twilight” moment.

We already know that the “Eclipse” tent scene, showing the friendly rivalry between Edward and Jacob, sits at #5, and a particularly sexy scene stands out as our next fan favorite. So, what made the cut at #4? Well, it happens to be Lautner’s reveal of his very cut abs in “New Moon.”

Long before that scene was captured on film, there had been fan chatter about whether a teenage Lautner could beef up enough to keep his part of werewolf Jacob Black in the second installment of the “Twilight Saga.” Determined to prove to naysayers that he had the muscle for the role, Lautner hit the gym and showed that he had the ambition, drive and physical bulk to keep the role.

“I have been working out,” Lautner told MTV News in December 2008. “I’ve been working out since the day we stopped filming ‘Twilight.’ I just weighed myself today; put on 19 pounds [and] guaranteeing [director Chris] Weitz 10 more by filming.”

All the promises and hard work paid off. The reveal of his admirable physique in the movie remains a fan favorite as our voters revealed. And, four movies in, it’s just as fun (and sexy) to watch the chivalrous Jacob strip off his shirt, just to assist an injured Bella.

Be sure to tune in to “MTV First: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” which kicks off Thursday, November 3, on MTV at 7:56 p.m. ET, followed by a Q&A with Kristen, Rob and Taylor on MTV.com!
